GREATER MIAMI SYMPHONIC BAND® (GMSB) is proud to present this virtual performance of LIBERTY FANFARE by JOHN WILLIAMS, the final offering of the GMSB Virtual Performance Series. Written in 1986, the composition was commissioned to celebrate the Centennial of the Statue of Liberty on July 4, 1986. But, in fact, the piece was actually premiered a month before, on June 4, when Williams conducted LIBERTY FANFARE with the Boston Pops. Williams commented that in composing the piece he had “tried to create a group of American airs and tunes of my own invention that I hope will give some sense of the event and the occasion”.
The members of GMSB extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the video & audio editor, GMSB Bassist and vocalist, Susie Blank Wolfe, who conceived, organized and produced all of the nine GMSB virtual performances. And congratulations to these GMSB musicians for their fine work and effort.
A PEAK BEHIND THE CURTAIN: To create this virtual performance, Susie Blank Wolfe first created a MIDI accompaniment to establish tempo, style and intonation accuracy for the musicians. Next, each musician listened to this MIDI accompaniment while they recorded the performance video of their individual part(s). The musicians then sent their raw video(s) to Susie. Then, over a 3 week period, Susie organized, synchronized and edited all of these individual recordings into the performance you see here. First step – editing, synchronizing and balancing each individual audio track, then editing the audio of each section of instruments, finally editing, synchronizing and balancing the entire ensemble into the audio for the virtual performance. Next – same process with the videos. In all, Susie spent over 150 hours organizing, assembling, tweaking and fine tuning each frame of this virtual performance.

BEHIND THE SCENES: To make this virtual performance come to fruition, it first required and arrangement be written for Flute Choir. Next, each musician, while listening to this MIDI accompaniment, recorded their performance video of their individual part. The raw videos were then sent to Video and Audio Editor, Susie Blank Wolfe, who is also the String Bass player and often vocalist in GMSB. Susie then organized, synchronized and edited all of these individual recordings into the performance you see here.
